This trip was no exception. For astounding reasons, I found myself over an hour north of where I intended one night. It had been a very long day after a very frustrating and upsetting day, but I found myself in familiar territory. On my drive back to where I was staying, I wanted to grab some dinner, but many places in the Highlands have limited hours or limited menus so stopping anywhere is a bit of a gamble. On the map, I noticed an old friend - The Culloden Inn. This was a place my friend and I visited in 2019 since we stayed a stone's throw from it for a couple of nights, and I have salivated for the bread pudding ever since. It would take me less than ten minutes out of my way to make the visit, and this bread pudding was well worth the entirety of the several hour extravaganza. As I was eating, I knew what lay at the bottom of the hill - Clava Cairns (the inspiration for the standing stones in Outlander). I had been there before, but I couldn't be this close to them without saying a quick hello. Only thing... The sun was setting quickly. Still, I was resolved. Well past dark, I follow the winding road and cut off down the thin path to the cairns. I am the only person for quite a distance - and the cairns are an intimidating sight even in daylight.

I'll wrap up my story with - I'm not entirely sure where the light is coming from in the pictures. The yellow is from the headlines of my car which I tried to position into the area, but it's still a little walk to the actual stones. The sky was pitch black. Clearly, my attempts at picture-taking in these conditions were poor at best. And my camera kept glitching to where I had to turn it on and off again several times.

I heard the buzzing. Not the kind you hear in your ears. It was existing - physical. Believe me. Don't believe me. It was an incredible experience. And I'll touch those stones every time. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://briannejamison.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/dsc00740.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Foreign Light</image:title><image:caption>Title: Foreign Light - Again, I don't know where the color in the sky came from. But I will forever love this picture just as it is. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://briannejamison.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/dsc00794.jpg</image:loc><image:title>A Warm Welcome</image:title><image:caption>Title: A Warm Welcome - After an hour flight from Lubbock to Dallas, a 3.5 hour flight from Dallas to New York, a MAD RUN to my 7 hour flight to Heathrow, and an hour and a half flight from Heathrow to Edinburgh - I still had a two hour car drive north (in the dark, in pouring rain, while getting used to vastly differently road rules and sitting on the right side in the car). It was late, and I was tired by the time I got to the cottage on The Brae. And this gorgeous loaf (which was whole at the time) was sitting there waiting for me. I have never been so thankful.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://briannejamison.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/dsc00974.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Rest</image:title><image:caption>Title: Rest - I spent a lot of the evening in this little spot. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://briannejamison.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/dsc00919.jpg</image:loc><image:title>To the Gunns</image:title><image:caption>Title: To the Gunns - My ancestry lies in Clan Gunn, and here is the tartan. (That's a very American phrase, btw - and many of the Scots I spoke with withhold a bit of an eye roll if it's ever recited to them.)</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://briannejamison.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/dsc01318.jpg</image:loc><image:title>The Falls of Bruar</image:title><image:caption>Title: The Falls of Bruar - I would be remiss if I didn't share ANY pictures of the falls.
